Numbers

Below is a short summary of the subject. If you don't know how to read Albanian yet, please see the 'Pronunciation guide'.

From one to ten...

1: njė
2: dy
3: tre
4: katėr
5: pesė
6: gjashtė
7: shtatė
8: tetė
9: nėntė
10: dhjetė

... and then the teens...

The numbers 11 - 19 are formed by adding 'mbė' + 'dhjetė' to numbers 1 - 10. 'mbė' means 'over'. 'Twenty' is 'njėzet'.

11: njėmbėdhjetė (one-over-ten)
12: dymbėdhjetė (two-over-ten)
13: trembėdhjetė (three-over-ten)
14: katėrmbėdhjetė (four-over-ten)
15: pesėmbėdhjetė (five-over-ten)
16: gjashtėmbėdhjetė (six-over-ten)
17: shtatėmbėdhjetė (seven-over-ten)
18: tetėmbėdhjetė (eight-over-ten)
19: nėntėmbėdhjetė (nine-over-ten)
20: njėzet

Put another way, 'mbėdhjetė' is practically equal to 'teen'.

... moving on: up to a hundred

The multiples of ten are formed by number + 'dhjetė'. The following list contains the multiples of ten. We already saw that 10 and 20 were respectively 'dhjetė and 'njėzet'.

10: dhjetė
20: njėzet
30: tridhjetė
40: dyzet (but 'katėrdhjetė' is sometimes used as well)
50: pesėdhjetė
60: gjashtėdhjetė
70: shtatėdhjetė
80: tetėdhjetė
90: nėntėdhjetė
100: njėqind

Note that:
(1) The multiples of ten seem similar to the teens. However, the multiples of ten do not have 'mbė'. So, 16 is 'gjashtėmbėdhjetė', but 60 is 'gjashtėdhjetė'.
(2) 20 and 40 are exceptions from the general rule (number + 'dhjetė'). Remember them. Remember also that some Albanian speakers use 'katėrdhjetė' instead of 'dyzet'.
(3) 30 has an 'i', not an 'e'. It is like this: 'tridhjetė', not like this: 'tredhjetė'.

The numbers between 20 and 30 are simple. Note that 'e' means 'and'.

21: njėzet e njė
22: njėzet e dy
23: njėzet e tre
24: njėzet e katėr
25: njėzet e pesė
26: njėzet e gjashtė
27: njėzet e shtatė
28: njėzet e tetė
29: njėzet e nėntė

The numbers between 30 and 40 are similar: instead of 'njėzet' you should use 'tridhjetė'. And then similarly with the numbers between 40 and 50, and so on, up to 100.

The hundreds

The word for a 'hundred' is 'qind'. So you can easily predict the following list:

100: njėqind
200: dyqind
300: treqind
400: katėrqind
500: pesėqind
600: gjashtėqind
700: shtatėqind
800: tetėqind
900: nėntėqind
1000: njė mijė (note the space)

A 'thousand' is njė 'mijė'.

Examples

In English a number such as 3731 is read as 'thirty seven thirty one'. In Albanian, it would be read like this 'three thousand and seven hundred and thirty one'. Lets see a few examples:

      3731: tre mijė e shtatėqind e tridhjetė e njė

      9999: nėntė mijė e nėntėqind e nėntėdhjetė e nėntė

      1111: njė mijė e njėqind e njėmbėdhjetė

A 'million' is njė 'milion'. Several 'millions' are disa 'milionė'.

      37,313,731: tridhjetė e shtatė milionė e treqind e trembėdhjetė mijė e shtatėqind e tridhjetė e njė

      9,999,999: nėntė milionė e nėntėqind e nėntėdhjetė e nėntė mijė e nėntėqind e nėntėdhjetė e nėntė

      1,111,111: njė milion e njėqind e njėmbėdhjetė mijė e njėqind e njėmbėdhjetė
